About Chengdu University

Located in Chengdu, the historical and cultural city famous home and abroad, the hometown of giant panda and the city once you come, never want to leave, Chengdu University (CDU), run by the Chengdu Municipal Government, is the only one comprehensive university which is offering regular undergraduate education.

Chengdu University was founded in 1978 and offered the undergraduate education. The name of the university can be traced back to 1925 when the famous educator and first president Zhang Lan founded the National Chengdu University. In 1983, Chengdu University changed its undergraduate education into the 3-year diploma education according to the requirements of loan from World Bank. In 2003, Chengdu University offered the undergraduate education again approved by Ministry of Education. In March 2006, approved by the Chengdu Municipal Government, the former Chengdu College of Education, Chengdu Normal School of Early Childhood Education and Chengdu Health School were officially merged into Chengdu University. In 2010, the Chengdu Railway Central Hospital was merged into Chengdu University and named as Chengdu University Affiliated Hospital.

With more than 30 years development, CDU has grown into a comprehensive city-based university not only taking Engineering, Liberal Arts, Pedagogy and Art as its dominant fields but also integrating the development of other disciplines, such as Management, Economics, Law, Science, Medicine and Agriculture.

CDU now has 1138 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 520 professors and associate professors, 626 teachers with doctor or master degrees, 803 teachers under the age of 45, 274 double type teachers, 8 provincial academic and technological leaders, 4 provincial experts with outstanding contribution and 3 provincial excellent teachers.

CDU now covers a total area of 2627 mu (about 1,800,000m2 ) with a total construction area of 321,219 m2, teaching facilities amounting to 130 million yuan, a collection of 1.65 million volumes of books and a campus Ethernet in a high speed of gigabit.

CDU now possesses 16 schools and has 21,000 full time undergraduates and junior college students. Currently, the university boasts 7 key provincial laboratories, 3 provincial experiment demonstration centers, 4 university experiment demonstration centers. In recent years, the university has been bearing 256 national and provincial key scientific research projects, 283 cooperative projects and 432 scientific and technological transformation projects and got 38 provincial and municipal scientific research awards. Besides, there are 362 monographs, textbooks and 1707 academic papers published, among them, 148 academic papers are indexed by SCI, EI, ISTP. CDU offers 50 undergraduate specialties in which there are 2 national key specialties and 8 provincial key specialties. CDU also has a series of quality engineering construction projects among which there are 2 provincial talent cultivation pattern innovation experimental areas, 4 provincial teaching teams and 17 provincial excellent courses. In 2011, CDU was approved by Ministry of Education as the second group of universities to implement the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program.

Student-oriented, moral education and being talent first is the theme for students affairs work in CDU. In recent years, the average rate of employment of CDU graduates is over 90% and about 58% graduates work or start their own business in Chengdu. Because of that, CDU has been awarded as the Advanced Group for University Graduate Employment of Sichuan province for four times. In recent three years, CDU students had won 17 national awards and 258 provincial awards in different competitions such as the National Mechanics Innovation Design Competition, the National College Students Mathematical Modeling Competition and so on.

CDU lays great emphasis on the international cooperation and exchange. Up to now, CDU has established friendly partnerships with over 30 educational institutions from more than 20 different countries and regions around the world such as the United States, Great Britain, New Zealand, Thailand, South Korea and so on. In 2010, CDU set up the Confucius Institute in the University of New Hampshire U.S.A and became the second university to have CI in Sichuan province. From 2009, CDU has the comprehensive cooperation with Waikato Institute of Technology, New Zealand in the fields of students, staff and academic exchange. In 2011, CDU established the Sirindhorn Thai Language and Culture Classroom with the Royal Chitralada School of Thailand. All these programs help to widen the international view of teachers and students.

CDU has provided tens of thousands of graduates to serve the development of Chengdu city, Sichuan province and all the country.
